More galleries in Bangkok: Hof Art Space and Chula Art Center

Another weekend, another gallery walk. This time we finally made it to the Chula Art Center and to the Hof Art Space.
The Art Center is part of the Chulalongkorn University and is located in the 7th floor of the library building. It sounds bigger than it is - the exhibition was in just on large room, divided by a makeshift wall.

The current exhibition is called Synthesis and features 8 artists from Asia. Krisida Suvichakonpong is a photographer with an excellent piece called Cabinet of Curiosities. Kedsuda Loogthong used soil from her hometown to paint rice fields - a traditional theme, but well executed. Also noteworthy is Pattana Chuenmana, who documents the tragedy of the nights, in particular car crashes. Promthum Woravut's drawings depicts images of students on a multiple-choice exam answer sheet - a not so subtile critic of the current education system.
The exhibition is open Mon - Fri: 9:00 am - 7:00 pm and Satuday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Next stop was the Hof Art Space not far from Phrakanong BTS at W District. They are displaying sculptures from Silpakorn University at the first floor (So Far So Good 3) and a mix of artists on the ground floor. It is mentioned on the website that "due to the vast space, HOF Art was able to influence a new generation of artists to create, and presented many exhibitions throughout the past nine years." We were actually a bit disappointed about the quality in general.

While we didn't expect much from the students (solid, but not really exciting with one exception), we thought of having better exhibits at the ground floor exhibits. Jirasak Plabootong is the exception here, his intense earth colored paintings are outstanding. This of course is just my opinion, and art is as much about personal taste as food is, so feel free to argue against my view any time.

Northern style curry with crocodile meat

A few days ago I spotted crocodile meat at Tesco Lotus, and since it was just 70 baht, I thought I give it a try. So today I prepared a red curry country style, without coconut but with just nam prik and water, together with the meat, some bamboo shoots and eggplants.

When I was opening the defrosted bag and pull the meat out, I already was sure that doesn't look to good. You could clearly see that this wasn't properly cut from a croc, but was torn apart, randomly hacked. It was fatty and looked like the garbage on the floor after the butcher had left.

Anyway, I wanted to see how the remaining eatable parts will perform with spicy chili, and they did well. Crocodile meat itself has kind of a fish texture while the taste is somewhere between chicken and nothing. So it needs to be either marinated, charcoaled or with a lot of spices.

If anyone knows a place where to get a proper crocodile fillet please let me know.

The first Arts camp in Laos

The first Arts camp in Laos
The camp thing follows me since I am in Asia, but I called a bit for it, since I organized quite a few events, Barcamps and a Filmcamp. And I always advocated to use the Camp-Concept for other industries, for example Art. Now the dream came true to have an ...

Arrived today: My pebble time. So far I like it, the colors are good, readability even indoor is good. Unfortunately one of my favorite apps, Up for Pebble, doesn't work, so I have to use another app to count steps. Also a bit of a disappointment is the voice recording: it only works (so far) to reply to SMS and certain messages. But this works pretty well - requires internet connection of course.

The wristband is way better then the one for the original pebble, feels softer and smoother. On pictures the bezel looks bigger than it appears in reality, not disturbing at all. The timeline feature is nice, although I would like to see more apps feeding into it (ToDoist, for example).

I think Pebble will start developing more functionalities once the headache with shipping is over. In particular the smart straps are a big issue: although the Pebble Time has the connector, no straps are on the market yet (or in sight). Let's hope something will be done soon.

How to find art events in Bangkok

This city might be known for it's street food stalls, night life and shopping malls, but it also has a vibrant art scene. As you may have seen here I am trying to explore this scene right now, focussing on Thai artists with some exceptions. What comes quite handy for this tour through galleries is the Bangkok Art Map.
It not only lists most of the galleries and art spaces, but also gives you an overview about upcoming art events likes vernisages and performances. It is released monthly and you can get it for free in many coffeeshops and art places liker galleries (BACC for examples has it at the reception desk).

It is published by Mason Florence with Steven Pettifor as Editor-in-Chief and part of the Talisman Media Group. You can find the map and activities only at facebook.com/bangkokartmap

Also recommended is a small booklet published by the Organise per l'Ambassade de France en Thailande, aka the French Embassy. They organize La Fete, a cultural Festival in June, with dance performances, exhibitions and even a hip hop battle. More at lafete-bangkok.com

There is a small but interesting exhibition at Bridge Cafe and Art Space (BTS Sapan Thaksin) Bangkok from a Thai and a French artist.

From the Facebook page:
"Kanjana Chonsiri and Alexandre Poisson, the two students selected in 2015 for the exchange program between the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts of Silpakorn University and Paris’ National School of Fine Arts (Ecole Nationale SupĂ©rieure des Beaux-arts de Paris - ENSBA) present the works they created during their crossed residencies of three months in France and Thailand.

Through their own perspective, Kanjana Chonsiri and Alexandre Poisson have established an artistic dialogue, a plastic testimony of their experiences and meetings, lived by both, in each country."

Personally I really like Kanjana Chonsiri's work quite a lot. She has a well developed sense for aesthetics and colors, brought together in well expressed small sculptures.

Since the space has a coffee shop as well and really nice staff, I can only recommend to make a stop there.

Art in Chiang Mai: From Universities to meeting rooms

While Bangkok is the busy and business driven capital of Thailand, Chiang Mai is often considered the get away for those who like the laid back culture of the north and the cooler climate. Some foreigners working in IT love the developer community there and decided to stay a while as digital nomads in co-working spaces. And then there is the art community. Although Chiang Mai promotes itself as art city, it isn't easy to find the right places.

We started at the Art Center of the Chiang Mai university and were overwhelmed by the current exhibition. Although students works, quite a few showed outstanding talent.

You can get latest updates via Facebook...

Next stop was a smaller gallery owned by  Mr. Chumpol Taksapornch  (Tuw). He was born on 20 March 1977 in Bangkok and studied Fine Arts in Thaivijitsilpa Art College in Chiang Mai, graduated from Rajabhat Thonburi Institute in Bangkok with a degree in Visual communication art design.
Chumpolis a full time artist and owner of Matoom Art Space in Chiang Mai. Its a lovely little place, at Tuw has it's own style with wobbly little creatures in a kind of a The-little-Prince-setting. The gallery is located in the south of the old city.

The Meeting room art cafe on the other side of the river, opposite Warorot Market is another little gem. Owner Jo is a full time gallerist with the goal to show as many artists as possible. He changes his exhibitions every two weeks, but he keeps the unsold pictures, so the gallery became a large collection of Chiang Mai art. We bought a small print by Marut Tamboonruang, who was born in 1980 and had exhibitions since 2006.

In a little chat Gallery and Community space owner Jo complained that there is no museum with a permanent exhibition in Thailand, showing local and international artists. A solution might be close: An article by Asian Correspondent announced an Art Museum for Chiang Mai . The Project is called MICAM Mai Iam Contemporary Art Museum and is supported by several Chiang Mai based Thai artists. The building is already under construction.

There are more galleries of course, a list of the top ten can be found here. We will visit more during our next trip to Chiang Mai, in particular  the famous Sangdee Art Gallery, the Chiang Mai branch of H gallery and Suvannabhumiartgallery with its focus on Burmese artists.

Last but not least we saw a lot of graffiti in Chiang Mai. There are good ones and bad ones, but some are really nice, so I took some pictures.
